EtG Frequently Asked Questions

STERLING Reference Laboratories offers a breakthrough test that allows detection for up to 80** hours after ethanol exposure.

Urine Testing for Ethylglucuronide (EtG)

Traditional urine testing for alcohol consumption is limited to a very narrow window of detection, typically only a few hours, and in diabetics, is subject to false positives due to spontaneous fermentation of glucose in the specimen.

To efficiently monitor alcohol abstinence, STERLING now offers this outstanding test with a rapid turnaround time of 2-4 business days. And our EtG test is very competitively priced.

Note:  EtG (Ethylglucuronide) is a sensitive biomarker of ethyl alcohol (EtOH) exposure; a low-level positive EtG could result from sources other than beverage alcohol.

80-Hour Alcohol Tests (EtG)

Is a precise indicator of an individual’s recent alcohol exposure. EtG testing utilizes liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) to detect the presence of EtG in urine up to 72-96 hours after ingestion. This increased window of detection is superior to traditional alcohol testing and offers a level of confidence previously unavailable.

EtG is NOT present in urine unless alcohol has entered the body, so false positives are not likely to occur, nor will EtG be present in the urine of diabetics who have not consumed alcohol.

** Published studies have shown EtG may be detected up to 96 hours, depending on quantity and frequency of exposure to alcohol.
