ANABOLIC STEROIDS: FASTEST GROWING ABUSED DRUGS
Anabolic/androgenic steroids (AAS) are synthetic analogues of the male sex hormone testosterone. The abuse potential of AAS is very high because they increase skeletal muscle mass and improve athletic performance. Athletes who participate in sports where speed and strength are desirable assets are likely candidates to abuse AAS. Side effects of anabolic steroid abuse can also be very significant. Oral and injectable steroids are associated with a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes, and the abuse of oral steroids is associated with a higher risk of liver disease. Undesirable body changes may also result from anabolic steroid abuse including breast development and genital shrinking in men and masculinization of the body in women. Acne and hair loss may occur in both sexes.
Urinary AAS testing is now available through STERLING Reference Laboratories.
The test offered by SRL is the same 24 steroid panel that is utilized by the International Olympic Committee. Probenecid, a diuretic used to flush steroids, is also included. The methodology used to test for AAS is liquid extraction followed by GC/MS analysis. All positive screening results are confirmed by repeat GC/MS analysis. The turn around time for AAS testing is 8-10 days. The following table is a complete list of the AAS that are tested.
| Bolasterone | Boldenone | 4-Chlorotestosterone |
| Clenbutero | Danazol | Dehydrochloromethyltestosterone |
| Dromostanolone | Epitestosterone | Ethylestrenol |
